Transnational Nationalism:
Pathways, Media, and Effects of the Global Diffusion of Nationalism
This project uses a cross-national comparative approach to examine how nationalism spreads through cross-border news flows, becomes localised, and shapes public attitudes in the digital age. It develops a broader framework of “transnational nationalism” that moves beyond research focused mainly on single countries and exclusionary nationalism. The project combines a two-wave panel survey with privacy-preserving digital data donation, builds a multilingual news dataset covering 90 countries, and develops a content-analysis pipeline based on retrieval-augmented generation and large language models. By releasing its research tools, the project will strengthen Taiwan’s capacity in computational communication and comparative research. Its findings will also clarify how cross-border information flows and potential influence operations shape national identity and political divisions, providing evidence relevant to media literacy, platform governance, and democratic resilience.
